Macfadyen Motors - How It All Began
1932 - The Murchison Family Garage
It all started in 1932 when Murdo Murchison's grandfather opened a small family garage. By 1969, a young Murdo was already sweeping floors, fixing punctures, and serving petrol at just 6 shillings and sixpence a gallon (32.5p!). His love for cars began right there among the smell of oil and petrol fumes.
1975 - Learning the Trade
After leaving school, Murdo joined M. Murchison & Sons full time in Kyle, Ross-shire. The experience was invaluable, but Murdo had his own vision for how a garage should run — one based on personal service and fairness — and he knew his future lay elsewhere.
1981 - Finding His Calling
Murdo took a job selling Fiats in Inverness and quickly proved a natural. Before long, people as far away as London were wondering why so many Fiats were heading to the west coast of Scotland.
1989 - A Bigger Stage
He became Area Manager for Fiat's Lancia Division, covering Scotland and Northern Ireland. The work was exciting, but endless travel kept him away from home. Murdo realised he missed what he loved most — direct contact with his customers.
1991 - A Name of His Own
Determined to build something personal, Murdo started selling cars under his own name from Gargunnock Filling Station, six miles west of Stirling. With just an office in his house and big ambition, the dream began to take shape.
1993 - Building a Base
Despite resistance from the banks, Murdo bought 15 Springkerse Road, Stirling, turning a former scrapyard into a thriving car sales site.
1996-1999 - From Vision to Reality
He later purchased 1.5 acres at 9 Borrowmeadow Road, Stirling, again without bank support and despite local obstacles. By 1999, his new purpose-built premises opened — a quality dealership with honest pricing and none of the inflated overheads of big-name dealers.
2003 - The Move to Doune
In 2003, Murdo sold Borrowmeadow Road and moved to Doune, refurbishing a neglected site into a welcoming showroom. Lower rates meant better value for customers, and his stock expanded to 40-50 quality vehicles. Over time, the site grew into a small business hub with eight tenants and twelve storage containers available for lease.
2016 - A New Chapter
The Macfadyen family purchased the dealership from Murdo, determined to carry his legacy forward.
2018 - Remembering Murdo
Murdo sadly passed away in 2018, but his commitment to honesty, value, and personal service continues to guide everything we do at Macfadyen Motors today.
2018 - Present Day - A New Era for Macfadyen Motors
Following Murdo's passing in 2018, the Macfadyen family has carried forward his values of honesty,
fairness, and personal service while growing the business into what it is today.
From our base in Doune, we've expanded beyond quality used cars to include vans, campers, and
motorhomes, meeting the needs of both local customers and businesses across central Scotland.
We've also launched a successful vehicle rental division, offering short- and long-term hire options
for cars, vans, and campers — giving customers more choice and flexibility than ever
before.
At Macfadyen Motors, we believe buying your next vehicle should be simple, transparent, and hassle-free. That's why our team works hard to deliver a relaxed, pressure-free experience backed by honest advice and great value.
- Our fully equipped service department provides a complete range of after-sales care, including:
- Routine servicing and mechanical repairs
